Yearning Teens, Frustrated Romance, Pretty skies — Is There Anything Else to Makoto Shinkai?
My latest article for Anime News Network has just been published here. It’s the culmination of a series of articles I wrote earlier this year about famed anime director Makoto Shinkai and his movies.
I didn’t just write about only the films either — where possible, I covered every manga and novel adaptation I could access — most are available in English, although Suzume’s novelisation isn’t released in the West until December this year. What’s interesting is that many of the novels are written by Shinkai himself, offering fascinating extra material, and in some places, plot closure that the movies were unable to offer.
