The Anime You Should Have Watched in Spring 2013

Once again I’ve written another anime retrospective for Anime News Network, this time covering the anime you should have been watching in Spring 2013, ten years ago. Obviously there’s no way I watched every single thing that streamed that season, but there were quite a few interesting shows, including a the first season of an obscure little thing called Attack on Titan…

Often when I write these things, I discover a few shows that I never watched at the time that ended up on my Eternal Backlog of Shame. This time, that show was Flowers of Evil, a very odd anime with a very non-anime aesthetic that won it a lot of (undeserved IMHO) hate from anime fans online. I won’t deny it’s a difficult watch, but I think I understand where the production team were coming from in regards to their decision to use rotoscoping to conjure a deeply unsettling “uncanny valley” effect. I only watched it for the first time recently in preparation for writing the article, so go follow the link to find my more detailed thoughts.

This was my third “anime of 10 years ago” article for Anime News Network, hopefully I can continue to write more!

Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten my writing for the AniTAY blog here on Medium — I’m currently writing a couple of my seasonal postmortem articles that will cover the Spring 2023 season.
