The Anime You Should Have Watched in Fall 2013

There’s something like seventy new anime episodes released every week right now. That’s so absurd, its no wonder the industry is in meltdown trying to spew out so much product. Recent revelations from overworked staff at famed studio MAPPA illustrate how badly studios treat their overworked, underpaid animators.

Anime oversaturation isn’t new though — even a decade ago there were arguably too many anime shows. A couple of times a year I write a new entry in a series of articles for Anime News Network, looking back at the anime released a decade previous. This time it’s the turn of Autumn 2013 (or Fall 2013, for all of you objectively incorrect North Americans), and below is a link to the article itself.

Autumn 2013 contained about 40 shows, which sounds more manageable than 70, but it’s probably twice as much as even the most dedicated anime fan can hope to keep up with. Every season has its good and bad shows though, and much like with the current Autumn 2023 season, Autumn 2013 was extremely strong. Lots of shows still hold up today, so the efforts of their animators haven’t been in vain. If only a bunch of the shows weren’t now out of print on disc and absent from streaming services in the UK…

Below you’ll find the rather lengthy list of my personally-curated TV shows and movies from a packed season, head to the ANN article for more details about them, plus their availability to stream in the US and UK.
