Sometimes a manga comes along that hits you right in the heart. That’s how Jun Mayuzuki’s currently-running Kowloon Generic Romance affects me. It’s my favourite manga right now, partly because I find protagonist Reiko Kujirai so magnetic. Mayuzuki draws beautiful women, which is probably part of the attraction, but her characters are also complex, with rich internal lives and sometimes mysterious drives.
2018’s After the Rain anime from Studio Wit was based on Mayuzuki’s previous manga, and it was one of my top shows of that year, partly also because I loved its main character so much. I’m very grateful that Anime News Network gave me the opportunity to gush about Mayuzuki’s work in such a public setting, and you can read my detailed review of Kowloon Generic Romance at the link below:
I’ve written quite a few manga reviews for ANN lately, and I’ve been lax in posting links to them here on Medium. I’ll get to them shortly, but I was so excited to see this review posted that I felt I had to share immediately! Look forwards to more of these reviews soon, there are a bunch I’ve submitted that await publication — though some of them are for the upcoming Spring Manga Guide, and that’s still about a month away.
I’m conscious I haven’t written a lot on Medium lately as I’ve been so busy with articles for ANN, but I do plan to resume my Ghost in the Shell retrospective soon. This weekend I’ve got my local Comic Con to attend, so once that’s out of the way, and I have a short holiday planned in early April, I should return with more things for you to read!
